Crucible- Your Opinion
Provide a sentence or two of your thoughts on why people compromise their morals. You may refer to the Seminar or your own life/observations.
In my opinion, people can compromise thier morals for many different reasons. But i think that people only do this in drastic and serious situations. Potentially even life threatening, or something that may harm a person or a loved one. For example the seminar in class today, Zimmerman maybe compromised his morals about murder and killed Trayvon Martin to protect himself, or his loved ones. This is one example of where people will compromise their morals.
I believe that many people will compromise their morals depending on the situation. One example of where people compromise their morals is in marriage. There are numerous situations today where you hear of marriages ending in divorce because of cheating. When people get married, they vow that they will be together forever. However, people will compromise that moral and promise if they cheat on their significant other. Many people compromise morals and this is just one example of how they do.
I feel the main reason people compromise life morals is to protect themselves. On occassion it can also be to protect a loved one. One example of protecting one's self would be like the Martin Zimmerman trial. Zimmerman felt endangered and took action into his own hands. This compromised a huge moral in life. The killing of another human being. Zimmerman may have felt this was an okay situation to break a life moral, but the majoirty of people could never kill someone. This trial is one of many examples of compromising morals.
I feel people compromise their morals to feel justified by their actions. Examples include George Zimmerman in the Zimmerman case and Marry Warren in Arthur Miller's, "The Crucible". During the Trayvon Martin case, George Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for attacking and shooting a teenage African American boy wearing a hoodie. Zimmerman believed Trayvon was a suspicious guy, judging by past criminal activity in the same neighborhood. However, Trayvon had nothing dangerous on him. Zimmerman compromised his morals by telling himself he would not have changed anything and it was for the greater good in the safety of that neighborhood. Similarly, Mary Warren in "The Crucible" justifies her position in the Salem Witch Trials as a result from an opposing John Proctor. Proctor wanted Warren ton confess the pretense behind the original sighting of witchcraft. Warren, however, panicked and lied that the Devil possessed Proctor. Just moments before her false confession, Abigail Williams, the origin of the Witch Trials, pretended to spot the spirit of an angry bird named Mary. The court judges believed Warren a witch. Saving herself and her friends, Mary Warren set blame on a possessed Proctor for the greater good of herself. Pressured by strong such a strong opposition, both George Zimmerman and Mary Warren compromised their morals with the belief that their actions protected the people around them.
Many people alter their morals their morals to protect themselves and loved ones. Especially in the play The Crucible, multiple characters give into the intensity that the hysteria is giving off to the whole town of Salem. Many turn to each other, and in conclusion, leave their morals in the dust to go along with the norm during harsh conditions. However, changing your morals for minor nonlife-or-death situations shouldn’t be a compromise at all. During those occasions I believe that people should stick to what they believe in. This plays a large role in our discussion on Friday about peer pressure. Many people in today’s society have learned about the outcomes of peer pressure and in return do not alter their morals unless it is a very serious occasion. Therefore, I believe people often times do compromise their morals, but with an abundance of caution.
People compromise there morals often for many reason. Peer pressure or anyother outside force may play a role in why people compromise their morals. Whether it is right or wrong there is a reason for it. It may be to save a life or even to do something that may lead to death. For example, many people of Salem compromised their morals to save their own lives. They would blame people of witchcraft knowing that people would die from it. Putnam compromised morals for self gain. Sometimes self gain seems more important than others. Putnam compromised morals to gain land from Giles and to seek revenge of Parris for being wronged in the church. A lot of times athletes compromis their morals. For example, steroids or HGH, help make athletes preform better and become stronger. These athletes know they are not allowed to have these things but they do them anyway to earn more money and become a better athlete. People mostly compromise their morals for money or personal gain. When all one cares about is themselves good rarely comes as result. People compromise their morals often for personal gain, envy and money.
Some people compromise their morals on grounds of self-preservation; others do it purely out of greed. For example, the people of Salem during the Salem witch trials accused their friends and neighbors of witchcraft to save their own lives, despite the fact that murder is obviously not morally justified. However, some people may compromise their morals simply for personal gain, like cheating at cards in order to win some cash. Ultimately, some people will do things out of self-interest more so than moral obligation and because of this people will often act against their morals.
IN my opinion people compromise their morals for a couple reasons. The first is to protect themselves. People especially at a young age believe it is so important to protect them. The next reason is to protect loved ones. As people get older they believe it is more important to protect loved ones rather themselves first.
I think that people compromise their morals to protect loved ones. If someone is in a situation that threatens someone they love they will do anything to save them. In the play the crucible, Elizabeth Proctor never lies, but when asked if her husband cheated on her with Abby she said no. Elizabeth had never told a lie but compromised her morals to save her husbands reputation. She lied because she loved her husband and did not want his name to be tarnished in the town, even if that meant abandoning her beliefs against lying and going against her morals.
People compromise their values, in my opinion, mainly for self-interest and preservation. In the Salem Witch Trials, for example, many people compromised their honesty and trustworthiness by falsely confessing to being involved in witchcraft. On top of that, they then proceeded to bear false witness to their neighbors, relaying to the court fictitious occurrences of witchcraft. These citizens, by committing to such actions, were able to survive the turbulent social climate of the witch-hunt. Humans, even though this attribute fades away from the superficial eye, are survivalist in nature, and exemplify it in a wide array of situations including that of the Salem Witch Trials. In this specific occurrence, a population within the small Puritan town knew the path to survival, and sacrificed their morals in defense of self-preservation.
People compromise their morals for countless reasons. One example I think occurs a lot in today's society is fear. Out of fear, people will go to extremes to protect loved ones or themselves. Fear drives people to do things they normally wouldn't do because they are scared of the possible outcome. In the George Zimmerman trial, I believe that the eye witness did not reveal himself for several months because he was afraid of what could have happened to him if he spoke directly after the murder. Fear drove the eye witness to keep quiet about the murder other than doing the right thing which would have been to go to the police immediately. I believe people compromise their morals out of fear.
People compromise their morals very often throughout their lives. People do this for a multitude of reasons. Like in the Witch Trials, many people completely forget about their morals and falsely accuse innocent people. This is done because of fear. I believe fear is the main reason people compromise their morals. This fear can vary from being afraid you will not fit into a group of friends or even in fear of your life. This indicates that for a person to abandon their morals, they must be involved in a situation in which fear is involved.
In my opinion people compromise their morals in situations that threaten their well being. In a situation where a person is faced with either sticking to their morals or getting their reputation or physical being hurt, that person will almost always choose to compromise their moral beliefs to keep themselves safe. As a class we explored an example of this talking about peer pressure, where kids will do almost anything to be viewed as normal and well liked. Morals are more then often compromised out of fear.
In my opinion, i believe that people compromise their beliefs due to peer pressure. In out class seminar on Friday, we discussed the effects of peer pressure and why it happens. When dealing with a other people, most people will disregard their morals or beliefs so they're not seen as the "odd one out" and be apart of everything. Just like in The Crucible, people forget what they personally believe, and conform to what everyone else thinks so they don't come across and different.
People compromise their morals to preserve or promote their lives. For example, Parris begins to accept the court and participate in the witch trials to protect himself and his posistion. He compromised his morals for self-preservation. On the other hand, one can infer that Abigal compromised her morals to help herself by furthering her relationship with Proctor by removing her wife. In both cases they allow themselves to block their moral compass by reasoning with themselves that the end justifies the means. Furthermore, desperation can lead to a person compromising their morals. In Africa, albinos are hunted, killed or/and dismembered, because the hunters need the money they can recieve from their bones to survive. -Alex Goebel
People compromise their morals for many reasons. One of these reasons is to keep from having to own up to something. On the flip side, people may sacrifice their morals for the sake of others so that the person they are doing this for does not suffer.
In my opinion, people compromise their morals for many different reasons. One of which is because of a choice they make pertaining to either their family or friends. Also another reason, mostly involved in teenagers, is peer pressure which I learned many things about during the seminar Friday.
Compromising your own morals should be an occurrence that doesn't take place very often, as your morals are a set of standards that you live by every day. People may compromise their morals in only the direst of situations, for example in The Crucible when Proctor must speak out against the Church to do what he feels is right, and to do what he feels is necessary. Earlier in the play, Proctor would not have done such a thing, but throughout the course of the play, such an action became necessary, justifying the compromise of his morals.
Individuals are most likely to "compromise their morals" when they let their personal beliefs, irrational fears, or other biases cloud their visions. For example, in the book, the puritan's extreme religious beliefs and fear of the devil cause them to compromise their morals. Also, I think, that many americans following the Trayvon Martin case allowed their vision to be blurred by fear of racism possibly being a motive of Zimmerman's. I think this fear causes many to shut their eyes to the facts of the case and compromise their morals by accusing a man who could very well be innocent. - Brennan Morell
Individuals often, in an attempt to conform to those who surround them, will alter and adjust their morals as a result of peer pressure. If a person feels outnumbered or insecure about their beliefs or is potentially facing judgement for them, their morals could change.
I believe that people compromise their morals when they are forced to, based on the situation they are currently in. A person may disregard their morals if they feel forced into doing something to save their lives. For example, in The Crucible, the citizens of Salem lie about witchcraft and blame others, allowing them to be hanged, in an attempt to save their own lives. Letting others be killed goes against the morals of many people, including my own morals.
I believe that people compromise their morals not only because of the sense that they are doing something wrong or right, but because deep down, there is always the will to do something right. With some people more than others, they want to do things where they have the highest positive effect that they can, whereas some people don't, and could care less whether or not what they do impacts people or things negatively or not. An example of this is the seminar on the albino bone market in Africa, and how the people that sell albino bones do it to survive by making some money so they can take care of basic needs. Even though it affects the albinos negatively (and I'm not saying they should), they do it to help keep their families alive (not counting the mentally impaired people who do this). Basically people, depending on the who they are, will try to do everything that they can to influence other people or things in the most positive way possible.
I think that people compromise their morals for an array of reasons. For one, many people will compromise their morals due to peer pressure, for example, a teenager may be pressured into doing drugs and alcohol, and they know that it is wrong, yet the teen does it any way to be like everyone else around them. I also believe people compromise their morals because of certain situations they are forced into in which they have to make a sacrifice that may be to help or hurt a certain person. Like Mary Warren in The Crucible, she does what many of the other girls in the town do and falsely act bewitched, however she eventually tells the court the truth that she was lying about being bewitched, because she realizes that she has put many innocent people to death because of what she has done and knows now what she did was wrong.
I believe that people can compromise their morals for many diffrent reasons. One reason would be the situation. For example, George Zimmerman, in the moment, believed that Treyvon Martin was a threat to the neighborhood, and though this decision was made only on the fact that Martin was wearing a sweatshirt, Zimmerman felt it was the right thing to do. Secondly, someone might compromise their morals because of fear or peerpressure, like Mary Warren from "The Crucible". The moment Mary tries to turn away from the group of girls who are accusing people of witch craft, they cry out and say that Mary is bewitching them. In order to proctect herself from being accused of being a witch, Mary claims that Proctor and his wife are the real witchs and that they tried to make her one to. Finally, people can compromise their morals because they do not have a very pure character and they may not think of any morals at all. Abby for example, willingly accuses innocent people of witchcraft, with many being hanged for it, just so she can be with a man she believes she loves. Phsycopathic and Sociopathic killers are also a good example. Because these people don't care about right or wrong, they truly have no moral values and only do whatever pleases them at that moment.
There many reasons as to why people compromise their morals. For example, Geroge Zimmerman, at the time, sacraficed his morals to save himself from the supposed attacks by Tryvon Martin. Zimmerman shot Treyvon after a fight on the ground antagonized by Zimmerman's glares at treyvon as he walked by. Now in my opinion tis is Zimmerman's fault because he started the fight but in the end he still shot treyon after feeling threatened and shocked after the attack. This in turn describes an example of sacraficed morals because although Zimmerman seemed paficistic at the time when it came to killing someone he still ended up killing treyvon to save his own life and what he thinks, others as well around the neighborhood and surrounding area.
I believe that people compromise their morals in order to protect themselves. For example, in, The Crucible, many of the people that lived in Salem were falsely accused. With their lives on the line, many people would say or do anything to not die. In other words, they went against their morals.
I have found throughout my many travels through the cosmos of time and space, that people will be far more than willing to sacrifice their morals in dire situations. Like some crazed gunman holding your children hostage, or other related things, like wrestling bears.
I believe that underneath our composed visage we all have an ability to be savages. We actually have a part of our brain that controls our more animalistic functions, the activity in this part of the brain is especially favored/ used in a psychopath’s mind, although an abusive childhood is needed for the psychopath to become a killer, rapist, cannibal, etc. but never the less we all do have the ability to put our humanity aside, forget our conscience, and turn against our peers, if in a life-threatening position. Humans are indeed animals and are subconsciously wired to reproduce and survive to continue the human race, this inner wiring could cause many people to risk the life of others, sort of like an internal/ mental/subconscious social Darwinism.
The times when people compromise their own morals are in times of desperation. We see this over and over again in The Crucible, where people will lie and accuse others of witchcraft in order to save themselves. Also, people often compromise their morals in order to save those they love such as what Elizabeth does for her husband. Today, majority of people will do whatever they can in order to save their own life or the life of somebody they love.
I think that people's morals are compromised either by a rush of emotion or bandwagon appeal. I think that people are sometimes caught up in their emotions and do not always think as clearly. Also, people's morals can be compromised because if everyone else is doing something then one may change their morals in order to fit in with the bandwagon.
I belive that people compromise thier morals mainly because of experiences that are going on currently in thier lives. But not only that, I also believe that underneath all the 'humanity' humans deep down have a natural desire to be savages. So, in conclusion people compromise thier morals alot of the time because when they're put under a stressful situation the savage inside of them comes out. Its not thier fault, its just human nature.
I think people compromise their morals when they have a desire or a need that overpowers their fear of moral hypocracy. For instance, let's say Joe is in desperate need of money and a job, and he is offered to do a big presentation defending a topic that he morally disagrees with, but doing the presentation would give Joe great business opportunites, and good paycheck. It would be understandable if Joe did the presentation because at that moment, his need for money was more important than his individual opinion.
People will compromise their morals for many different reasons. Many think that in order to fit in you must change what you beleive in. Also, someone may be convinced by others to change their morals. Another reason people may compromise their morals is to get something they want and need to have. When one compromises their morals, it isn't always a bad thing. Those morals might be changed for the better.
Individuals compromise their morals for reasons such a trying to fit within society. Also another reason is that they may have no sense of direction or what to believe so they go along with what others tend to believe. The matter of the fact is that people can change their viewpoints on certain topics for better or for worse.
In my opinion, people can compromise thier morals for many different reasons. But i think that people only do this in drastic and serious situations. Potentially even life threatening, or something that may harm a person or a loved one. ReplyDeleteI think that people's morals are compromised either by a rush of emotion or bandwagon appeal. I think that people are sometimes caught up in their emotions and do not always think as clearly. Also, people's morals can be compromised because if everyone else is doing something then one may change their morals in order to fit in with the bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteI belive that people compromise thier morals mainly because of experiences that are going on currently in thier lives. But not only that, I also believe that underneath all the 'humanity' humans deep down have a natural desire to be savages. So, in conclusion people compromise thier morals alot of the time because when they're put under a stressful situation the savage inside of them comes out. Its not thier fault, its just human nature.
ReplyDeleteI think people compromise their morals when they have a desire or a need that overpowers their fear of moral hypocracy.

ReplyDeleteIndividuals compromise their morals for reasons such a trying to fit within society. Also another reason is that they may have no sense of direction or what to believe so they go along with what others tend to believe. The matter of the fact is that people can change their viewpoints on certain topics for better or for worse.
