Death of a Salesman Movie

What stylistic/directing choice (music, flashbacks, casting, setting, etc.)  helped  or enhanced your understanding of the play?  How and why?

  1. The way the flashbacks were demonstrated in the movie helped to decipher reality vs the past better in the movie rather than the book. When flashbacks were occurring it was very apparent as to when Willy was no longer within the flashback anymore.

  2. I feel like watching the movie really helped me to understand what the tone and the mood were throughout the whole play. See the flashbacks and being able to see the emotions on the characters faces was extremely helpful tool to have instead of trying to infer what each character was feeling emotionally.

  3. The flash backs in the movie helped me understand how crazy willy has become. Also it helps to see how characters interact with eachother and how they are effected emotionaly.

  4. I felt that the flashback in the movie actually took away from the movie and did not help understand it at all. The transitions and the actual scene of the flashbacks were not different at all from the movie and was just confusing. Also the fact that the movie was directed to make it look like a play set also did not help understand it. The movie in general, though, did help understand the dialouge between certain characters such as Ben.

  5. I think that the flashbacks really helped to enhance my understanding of the play. At some points while we read, I couldn't separate dreams from reality. In the movie, I got a clear understanding as to what parts were real life and what parts were just a figment of Willy's imagination. The flashbacks also presented me with an idea of how the character Ben looks, what happened in the past, and how clinically insane Willy truly is. Also, the emotions that you could see in the movie really helped with the tone of the play.

  6. The flashbacks helped my understanding for the movie because they further developed the character of Willy. They really showed how crazy Willy really was. In the book when you don't have a visual aid, it's hard to get a sense of what the characters are actually like.

  7. the flashbacks helped me understand how and why willy became the way he was. it also helped me understand why biff and happy were the way they were, why willy has become insane and teh interactions of the kids and willy make a lot more sense after the flashbacks especially after biff goes to boston.

  8. The flashbacks helped us understand the novel a lot more. It showed us what Willy is trying to hold on to and does not want to let go. He wants the past to become a reality because he does not like what his boys have become. Also showed how messed up Willy is and how messed up his life is.

  9. Watching the movie really helped me understand the tone and the flashbacks that happened in the story. Understanding the flashbacks really helped the movie and story come to me. It really showed me Willy's standpoint on school and success, another way to word what Willy's mindset is, is that success is determined by what people think of you, not what you choose "success" to be. This causes problems with not only Willy's life which ends short due to his mistakes in the past, but his sons Biff and Happy, Biff failed Math is HS and Willy didnt do anything about it, soit backfired and now Biff cant get a job.

  10. The flashbacks i the movie really helped me understand it better because you clearly know when he is in a flashback in the movie compared to the book when it switches from past to present without really telling the reader. The flashbacks also show how crazy willy is and that he is crazy.

  12. I had no trouble understanding the play itself, although the flashbacks did help solidify the overall plot of the movie. Aditionally, the dialogue as spoken by the actors did help show how crazy all of the characters are.

  13. The flashbacks did help the overall understanding of the play because it helped see the difference between past and present. While in the book it was difficult to understand when it was a flashback and when it was in the present. It also helped develope Willy as a character and really show his true character and how insane he was

  14. The flashbacks in the play helped me understand Willy’s tragic life. You realize in the movie how much crazier Willy is and it is hard to get a sense of that in the book. The scenes give you a vivid description of his character and how bad of a person he is.

  16. Just seeing the movie as a whole was helpful, it was a lot easier to see what was going on, and to put it all together. Seeing the flashbacks made them way more understandable. This was helpful because in the play it was hard to imagine what Willy was flashing back to, but the movie made it way more real and relatable, it was very helpful seeing the movie. Made Willy’s break downs more real and made me hate him even more.

  17. What helped me understand the play were the flashbacks. The biggest flashback the really stood out to me was reality verses the past because Willy is stuck on the past and will not except that Biff and Happy are not what Willy thinks they are such as Happy being a football player and Biff being a sales man.

  18. the flashbacks in the play gave me a much better understanding of happy and biff and the way they were in high school when it came to sports and having fun. Willy was always very encouraging towards them and he uses flashbacks to take himself back to the good days
