Modern Day Gatsby-- How are the choices universal? Explain how they are both hopeful and tragic. Use examples from novel and present day.

  1. An example of a modern day gatsby story is Tiger Woods with his Mistress Scandal. The choices are universal because Tom chooses to cheat on his wife and so does Tiger Woods and their wives actually know it's happening. It is tragic because these women choose to get hurt and stay with their unfair, ignorant husbands. But it is hopeful because these women have a chance to start a new life with someone else and leave their husbands for someone better without an argument from their husbands. Tiger Woods life took that hope and left him but Daisy is still in Toms Shadow and lets him cheat on her while she knows.

  2. All the choices are universal because with Clinton because he was the president he could get any girl he wanted. He abused his power and cheated on his wife. This connects to Tom Buchannon because Tom cheats on his wife and can get all the girls because he is so rich and powerful.

  3. In modern day Gatsby there has been many events that are universial that still take place today, such as people asking for popularity and displaying racism. For example, the main charachter in project x had his party strictly for populatirty, in hopes to land his dream girl. Another example, in class I brought in a tragic article about a teacher who said "we dont need another black president". This is tragic because it shows our countries ignorance basing our views off of skin color rather then off of the decison's that he has made. Overall, the problems are still reoccuring over the years showing that even though our world is becoming more modern, our problems are still somewhat always the same and univerisal.
