How do the 3 of the characters compare to your perceptions from the novel? Be specific.

  1. One of the characters that is portrayed differently in the movie than in the book is nick. In the movie Nick goes insane after gatsby is killed while in the book he does not get to that extreme. The other character that is different is gatsby. In the movie gatsby is more obsessed, he must have daisy or he is not living. On the other hand daisy is exactly as i thought she would be. In both the novel and movie she is timid and afraid to follow her true feelings and do what is best for her and to do whats right.

  2. In the movie Gatsby seems less polite and calm rather than in the book. In the movie Nick ends up in a mental hospital which is not like the book. Lastly the relationship between Myrtle and Tom seems to fit the way it is portrayed throughout the book, and or slightly more emotional in the movie.

  3. Daisy was spot on for me. She had an aura around her of innocence in the way she presented her self and her thought process. When she was talking to Gatsby about her daughter and how she wanter her to grow up to be a little fool and when she was in Gatsby's room with all his clothes she just seemed like she wanted to be happy but didn't know how to achieve it.

Nick was also very similar to how i perceived him to be in the novel. He was intellectual but usually went with the flow of what people were doing. He have a very caring personality and wanted the best for everyone. He genuinely cared about Gatsby and Daisy and wanted what was best for each of them. He was just an overall good guy was in touch with his emotions.

Gatsby was a little different than I thought he would be. In the novel he seemed calm and collected for the most part but in the movie he was just more frazzled and worried all the time. It made me feel like he was trying way too hard to cover up his emotions.

  4. In the novel, I perceived Gatsby as being calm, cool, and collected throughout the entire novel. That was not the case though in the movie. In the movie he was much more emotional.

In contrast, Daisy was exactly as I had imagined her. She was a quiet girl who kept her thoughts to herself. She just went along with life but you knew by hearing her speak in the book or seeing her facial expressions in the movie that she was not happy.

Also, Nick's life was very close in the movie to as I saw it in the book. He was a young man striving for success in a brand new world. He lived in a quaint house tucked away among the mansions. He kept quiet and just absorbed everything that was going on around him, learning from what other people did.

  5. In the novel i think that all the characters followed the same role as i had thought they would take except for Nick. Nick is not the same because he goes crazy after Gatsby is shot and killed. All others beside Nick are played very well, especially Daisy. Her role was very convincing and on par with the way she is described and perceived through the novel by F.Scott Fitzgerald,

  6. In the book Gatsby was in love with Daisy or at least the idea of Daisy, but in the movie he seemed more obsessive with the idea of her. The movie didn't play up much of the romance between Daisy and Gatsby and it made Gatsby seem more materialistic.

  7. In the movie Gatsby seemed to be more obsessed over trying to get Daisy but in the book he just was in love with her. In the movie Daisy was just as i thought she would be. She was afraid and all she cared was about money. Also another character was Myrtle. In the move, she was barely shown until she died and it did not show her with Tom at all. In the book she was with Tom alot also Tom bought her things and They went to the city together.

  8. In the novel I really never got the connotation that Gatsby was totally obsessed with getting Daisy, while it was his dream I never really portrayed him as a freak that would do anything to get Daisy

Another character was nick, aside from being played NY Toby McGuire there wasn't really anything wrong with the character. I like how the movie added in that he went insane after all of the events that happened. I would have preferred him to be played by Joseph Gordon levitt on thr movie

I thought that Daisy was spot on in the movie and she played the character exactly as I had pictured in the novel

  9. In the movie Gatsby seems to be more of a character to compare to rather in the book as more of a bad person. Daisy in the movie seems to come to her sense once but then goes back to her old self by staying with Tom, when she really should have gone with Gatsby. Nick becomes excited and happy with the New York atmosphere at the beginning and towards the middle but then comes to his sense that New Yorkers are all mean and ignorant.

  13. In the book Gatsby was not as obsessed with love for Daisy and the idea of Daisy, but in the movie he seemed more obsessed with the idea of her. Also in the book, nick does not go insane after gatsbys death, but in the movie he goes insane and goes to an asylum. Lastly, the movie portrayed Daisy just as I saw her, she was a quiet girl who kept her thoughts to herself.

  14. In the movie I believe that gatsby was portrayed as more insane than in the novel. I also think that daisy remained the same in the novel and In the book as well. Another character that I thought was different and portrayed differently was myrtle because she had a bigger role in the novel and was only shown dying in the movie

  15. In the movie and book I thought tom was pretty much the same, mean and ignorant about his money .
I would have thought gatsby would have been more cool and collected like he was in the book though. Nick was different in the movie than the book bc he went crazy after gatsby died and seemed obsessed with him in the movie

  16. In my opinion, Daisy and Tom were cast perfectly, both are ignorant and careless and hurt almost everyone they encounter in one way or another. On the other hand, Gatsby has a few key differences between the book and movie. In the book he comes across as more compassionate and in love with Gatsby, in the movie Leo depicts Jay as being more in love with himself and arrogant.

  17. In the movie Nick is way more awkward than I imagined him, he seems to just not know where he stands or where his place in society is, he is semi lost. Daisy is everything I imagined her to be, she is just a fool, who allows money to make mistreatment, mistakes and abuse just go away. Gatsby in the movie is portrayed as way more obsessive than I thought he was in the novel, and a little more aggressive than I anticipated him being.

  18. they were pretty much spot on. since you showed the clip from the movie beforehand, I was ale to picture the characters in this manner the whole time, which was good, as I typically have trouble coming up with a mental image of characters.
