Gatsby Movie- What are key or distracting differences from the movie and novel?

  1. One of the obvious differences is the frame story with Nick in a mental home. The other difference that I find a bit distracting is the way Gatsby tends toward insanity. I realize that Gatsby possesses an unhealthy obsession but I always envision him as cool and collected. I do like how the back story and love connection is portrayed. Perhaps this angle is played up to accentuate the tragedy of it all. Regardless of all differences, I find the casting, costuming and even soundtrack (although anachronistic) quite compelling. I think the themes of the desire and dangers or the American Dream and reality v. perception ("Allegory of the Cave) are depicted quite well. I love this movie! I think Daisy is most fitting in her role but both Leo and his predecessor Robert Redford are both smashing!

  3. The movie and book seem relatively the same however I felt as though in the movie when Nick began finding the truth out about Gatsby's passed he was not as effected or upset as he is in the book.

  4. Everything that happened after Gatsby died: especially Nick. Gatsby's death seemed to effect him much more in the movie than in the book. This didn't really bother me. It was just seeing he story through different eyes. Gatsby also seemed a bit more frazzled throughout the whole movie, where in the novel he appeared to be a little more calm and collected, but that may have just been the way I perceived the novel.

  5. The one thing that bothered me the most that was different in the movie compared to the book is how Nick was telling the whole story to a psychiatrist. That was not the case in the book. Also, another key difference was the afterlife of Gatsby. Nick was perceived as calm in the novel but in the movie he was much more emotionally distraught with the death of Gatsby.

  7. A difference between the book and movie that I thought was a big deal, was how in the movie they didn't show a lot after Gatsby's death. In the book you get to see some of Gatsby's past and it is revealed to Nick, but the movie misses out on that.

  8. A difference between the book and the movie is that Nick started off in a mental institution and explained the novel from there. The book shows Nick as more calm but in the movie it shows him as going crazy and being crazed that Gatsby died. Also Nick was more friendly towards Gatsby in the movie but in the book when he found out his past he was mad.

  9. Nick was in an insane asylum in the movie also in the movie he never ran into Tom in the city after all of the events transpired he just went insane and basically left. Another thing that really bothered me that wasn't necessarily in the book was that the cats in the movie look like they are going 100 mph all the time. It also implies that people with a lot of money that have cars drive like madmen and weave between all traffic all of which I find hard to believe.

  12. The movie seems to be told from the point of view from half of the book that the New Yorkers are fine and are fine the way they treat people and how ignorant they are because It is told by Nick whom was ok with the New York atmosphere until he realizes they are ignorant and snobby. The movie makes that seem cool and okay. While the book is hard on how it is not okay and that is not the way you should treat people that way and be so ignorant about their loved ones.

  15. The main difference between the movie and the novel is that the movie is told through nick in an asylum. Another difference is that nick is a lot nicer to gatsby in the movie than In the book. Overall I think that the movie portrayed the novel pretty well.

  17. While the novel and movie share many similarities, there are also many differences. Namely the mixed culture from the 1920's and modern day. Jay-Z was most likely not the choice artist in 1920's America, additionally, Gatsby seemed much less optimistic and love struck in the movie.

  18. One major difference between the book and the movie is that Gatsby’s focus was definitely more centered on Daisy in the movie. He made her his whole world and throughout the novel Gatsby had other things on his mind. Also in the movie Gatsby seemed to be a little more obsessive rather than love struck.

  19. one of the differences between the book and the movie is the presence of rap music. I realize that that book has no audio, but it sets a different vibe than the book does.
