Why do you think teenagers party recklessly today?
How does it compare to the parties at Gatsby's house?
Would what you have done if you had been at this party?
What do you think Nick Carraway would have done if he were in this same situation?

ReplyDeleteIf Nick Caraway were in this type of situation, I believe that he would have panicked over his loss of control. I think a catastrophe such as this would be his breaking point and his wake up call to leave his head. After all, the only person he knows who he can truly go for guidance is himself, although many of his characteristics seem to have been adopted from the individuals he observes and lives through, almost as if he's taking notes and looking to them as mentors. He doesn't know any better. So in a situation such as this, I feel that his chaos and confusion would cause Nick to have an emotional collapse of some sort, and he'd be too busy trying to make everything go away and neutralize to get actual help. And sadly, I think he'd blame the whole thing on himself.

I feel Nick would have gone to a party like this. He also would have pretended that it was the right thing to do just because it is cool. He mainly would have gone along with it to fit in and move up his social status. Nick just wants to be known by others. However he is not as shallow as other characters in the book. For example he probably would not have thrown a party, but he definitely would attend one of these parties. Nick feels he would gain respect from more powerful social people by attending these kinds of events.
ReplyDeleteBecause it is a part of society today, to have that image of someone that partys or someone that acts in that certain way is considered a good attribute. Which leads to excessive partying among teenagers.
ReplyDeleteBoth parties are large, excessive, full of alcohol and above all people that are out of control. The party scene may be the same, but the people and their actions are extremely similar.
I would have left the party immediately to avoid persecution by the police.
I think that Nick would have stayed until the police came. Strictly because he wants to be a part of the action, or in the midst of the upper class and the cool people. For whatever reason, i believe that he would have stayed to be a part and see what the party would have turned into be.
Nick Caraway is not like any of the other people in West Egg. He does not care as much about his social status as the other people do. Therefore I believe if Nick was in the same situation as this teen, he would have the party under control. But I also think Nick would not throw a party like this to fit in. Nick would only attend these kinds of parties because he does somewhat care about his social status. Living in such a class driven society, you have to somewhat care about your social status.
ReplyDelete1. I think most teenagers party recklessly today. Even though they have heard stories of people who have been in drunk driving accidents and have ruined their futures, most of the teenagers simply believe that it won’t happen to them. This is mainly the reason why they go ahead and recklessly party.
ReplyDelete2. Teenagers’ parties and Gatsby’s parties are similar mainly because of the fact that there is not a care in the world. The teenagers at the reckless parties want to escape from the repetitive days of school and worries about their future which is why they are so reckless. Gatsby’s parties are about the same because the people attending are trying to escape their disillusioned realities.
3. I probably would have left. There is a difference between a party where there is just drinking and a party where people are getting hurt and destructing property. Therefore, I would just leave the party mainly because of the stupid and immature decisions that were taking place.
4. Nick wouldn’t throw a party that could get this out of hand. However, he would attend and most likely go along with what others are doing mainly because his natural instinct at this part of the book is to try to fit in. He doesn’t long to fit in but he just ends up doing so. Therefore, I believe Nick most definitely could be apart of punching the walls or pushing a car into a tree just because he isn’t a leader but rather a follower.
I believe teenagers party recklessly today because they want to take advantage of being away from their parents to let their inner teen be exposed. Although both Gatsby and teens have parties, there is one big difference, the age. If I was at this party, I would have been very scared and would have left immediately. I believe Nick Carraway would have also left because of the way he acts, as an outcast.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion if Nick was at the party he would be a contributer to the madness. In my personal opinion Nick does a lot of things jut to fit in. For starters just attending Gatsby's party was an act of following. Therefore, if Nick attended a party where everyone breaks everything and everyone was peeing in things I personally believe Nick would join.

If Nick were in that situation, he would probably act the same way he does in the novel. He would sort of remain away from everyone else and observe, and try to get his head around their immoral behavior. He wouldn't take part in their activities but would be intrigued by them enough to stay and watch.

If nick was in this situation I think that he would have joined or went to a crazy party like that , however I don't think he would have taken part in the destructive behavior. I think that nick would not throw a party like this or allow a party to get this out of hand. I think that Nick would most likely would not be influenced by others and stay above the bandwagon appeal.
ReplyDeleteI believe Nick would have gone to the party and would have been part of the crowd. But I don't think that he would go to the extreme that some of the others went to at that party. Nick is more grown up and wouldn't destroy Gatsby's house. Teenagers and adults have different kinds of parties and I believe that adults can control themselves more with alcohol. Gatsby's parties were wild but they were not as destructive as this one.
ReplyDeleteI believe Nick would go and observe the on goings but not partake in them. He is by nature a passive and non obstructive individual who would not try and stop the party from happening but at the same time he has too moral a character to partake in the revelry. Most likely, he would just watch and enjoy himself without getting too involved. He wouldnt punch any walls or pee on the kid's bed but he would not stop others from doing so.
ReplyDeleteI believe Nick Carraway wouldn't have added to the chaos of the party, but he wouldn't do anything to stop it either. The best way to describe is probably a wallflower or observer. He is always there watching and creating opinions of situations, yet he will never step in and actual participate. His job in the novel is to be the readers unbiased narrator who can fairly citizen everyone we come across. To actual insert himself into a situation, no matter his intentions, who be out of character and against the role he has been casted.
ReplyDeleteI think Nick would not throw a party like this because he does not want to feel obligated for the responsibilities. He would defiantly attend because he is that personality type and wants to see the reactions. I think that the teenagers having the party is different because they came to the party knowing they could be disrespectful, while Gatsby's parties don't get out of hand right away. Nick would most likely stay until the end of the party because he wants to be completely part of all the drama, even if it causes him to get in trouble.

I do not believe that Nick would have had the party. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald characterizes Nick as somewhat of an "outsider" by not possessing the same traits as other individuals in his social group. Although Nick may have come from old money and appears to belong with the upper class, 1920s group, his personality does not fit in with the crowd. If Nick attended a party like that, I think he would go along with everything, just to fit in, but I feel that he would be the one who would have the mentality to realize that the party is wrong. But he just would not be strong enough to say anything.
ReplyDeleteIf a Gatsby party were to get out of control, I believe that Nick would neither take part in the chaos, nor try to prevent it. Being from the West Egg, Nick is characterized as an observer at the Gatsby parties, he is even thrown off when he cannot find Mr. Gatsby at the first party he attends. His outsider, but attempting to fit in qualities would make contribute to him in a neutral position of an onlooker of a party were to get out of hand.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe Nick would attend a party like this. In the Great Gatsby, Nick is uncomfortable at Gatsby's tame parties which leads me to believe that there is no chance he would attend such an out-of-hand party. Though Nick does seem to enjoy monitoring people's actions at such social events, I do not think Nick would have it in him to go to such a ridiculous party involving such odd things.
ReplyDeleteI believe Nick Carraway would not have gone to the party to preserve his entitlement. Nick only went to parties because he was invited. There, he enjoyed himself with other guests and stayed to the end to thank the host. At the teenagers's party, the majority of the guests came for entitlement, believing themselves popular to attend a large party. In contrast, Carraway acts courteous to the host and/or hostess. He shows that entitlement comes from the maturity of one's actions, not the chaos at a well-known gathering.
