Compare Holden to Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Willy or Biff Loman and yourself.
Holden is similar to Biff Loman in that he doesn't want to conform to society. Biff, instead of doing what his father wants, which is to get a job white collar job that is succeful by societies standards, would rather move out west and work outdoors. Holden chooses to not conform to society in a different way. He rebels and goes against what society expects of him. Biff and Holden both choose to not do what is expected of them. They do this in different ways and to different extents but can both be considered non conformists.
Holden Caufield and Nick Carraway are not terribly alike. Both come from modest backgrounds, and become disillusioned with the world around them. However, Holden was disillusioned with the phony world around him from the start, while Nick was only soured after spending time with the upper echelons of society.
Holden and myself couldn't be more different. While Holden sees things in an eternal dreary and depressing light. Conversely I see things in a almost always positive light, always surrounded by sheer joy. Holden in my opinion needs a hug.
Holden is very similiar to Willy Loman. Both do not know what they want out of life and are depressed. Willy drives himself into the ground trying to be achieve an impossible amount of success. Holden is way to critical of socierty and makes choices that hurt him. In addition, both sabotage their own happiness and are too critical of their own life. Willy wants to remove himself from his life and does so through suicide. Holden also wants to remove himself from his life through running away. Holden and Willy both take part in a somewhat shaeful sexual act. Willy cheats on his wife and Holden hires a prostitute. Like Holden, I see many problems with society and the people in the world. We both want to escape society and live a free, but alone, life.
